This was the first "special board" that we developed. The intent is to involve
Seafarers of Catan and Cities & Knights and, to spice it up
a bit, we also use the Fishermen of Catan. The name "Depleted Islands"
comes about because each of the 4 major islands is missing one resource.
Grain can be found on all 4 islands, but Lumber, Brick, Sheep and Ore are
each missing from one island. This means that if you place both starting pieces
on the same island, then you will have problems getting one of the resources.
Of course, if you have a gold hex and/or some fishing ports, then you can make
up for the missing resource.
To encourage players to cross the sea hexes, the first player to "connect" two islands receives 2 VP, while the other players receive 1 VP when they first connect. The two single hex islets are just convenient stepping stones when going across the oceans and don't qualify as islands (for purposes of earning a VP). When setting up the board, make sure that each island is depleted in one resource. Each island has 10 resource hexes, so use one of each of the 10 production numbers for each island. We usually put 5 or 9 numbers on the gold hexes, and the rest are randomly placed. The islets usually get a 6 or 8 token. To win, a player must amass 14 Victory Points.
