I have always been interested in tiny countries, from the days when I collected
stamps from Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, etc. I wanted to add the small
countries of the world to my travel bucket list, but where do you draw the
line? What makes a country a "small country"? Realizing that my home town,
Calgary, is quite a good size, I decided that I would determine a country
to be "small" if it would fit into Calgary (maybe with a bit of squeezing).
Surfing the Web turned up 24 countries that fit the bill (no pun intended)
which was a reasonable load to add to my bucket list. I did find
discrepancies relating to the status of some countries (ie. is it or is it not
a country?) and differing estimates of the total area of the countries. However,
I have selected the countries as I have best seen fit. Below is a list of
these tiny nations and my visiting progress to date.
